Painting with, not of, landscapes using earth pigments sustainably foraged by the artist

A particular language of materials and form, with a muted individual colour palette mixed fresh for each painting

SOFT ROCK refers to sedimentary rocks which are less resistant to weathering, shaping coastal landforms

Soft rocks erode quicker to form bays and slopes while hard ones create headlands and cliffs

Rocks are reliable

These sedimentary rocks contain pigment which is durable, stable and light fast

Artworks and their colours are enduring

Rocks hold history

Art made from soft rock illustrates origin and resilience

Longevity recalls what has gone before and invites contemplation of what may come

Love letter to and from the land

A showcase for the interdependence of humans and the natural world

Art demonstrates we are all related, each part connected to and reliant upon others to survive in functional ecosystems

Hope for a more harmonious relationship, demonstrated through symbolism

Source, tools, technique, together demonstrate link between land, wildlife and humans

Earth is reflected in source, animal feather in tool, plant in abstract designs

Soil sustaining them within pigment

Human hand as the applicator

Heritage approach reinterprets ancient art of earth pigments in a cultural throwback

Drawing on pre-history to revisit atavistic methods in a contemporary fashion

Born of a process that long predates the digital era and AI

Foraged earth minerals are sourced painstakingly by hand from the glorious landscape of Britain

A slow and laborious collaboration with nature

These artworks are made from scratch and take time to prepare

Pigments selected, processed, refined, mixed with love by artist

A highly experimental journey

Colours inspired by Devon Red stain in richly pigmented soil

Discovered repairing cob walls, causing bath water to run ochre after a day’s work

Wider colour inspiration comes from the ever changing beautiful countryside, coastline, mountains, hills, valleys and rivers of Britain

Pigment materials are mixed fresh for each artwork to create unique and variable hues every time

Every artwork distinct in thought, material and execution

Each pigment preparation produces a different palette

No two works will be the same

A unique visual language of materials and form creates works with natural variations

Just as in nature

All artworks original

All one off

No editions, no prints

A highly personal approach creating artwork that is always distinctly characteristic

Meaningful change can come about not from defending nature but through building connection with it

Works are created on a magical medieval Devon farmstead

An unspoilt ancient place featuring a historic country house and rare surviving collection of cob barns

A small estate dating back to the Domesday Book of 1066 and once owned by the King of England

A green and lush nature-filled land is home to peacocks, barn owls, tawny and little owls, pipistrelle bats, ducks, swallows, house martins, myriad songbirds, deer, fox, bees, wasps, butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, toads, frogs, newts, hedgehogs, voles, field mice and much more..

Cottage gardens are stocked for pollinators, meadows cut for hay, orchards planted with apple, pear, plum, quince

Ancient Royal Oaks and hedgerows provide habitat

A lake and pond provide water

Artwork is inspired by living harmoniously within this natural wild world
